[Imc-africa] thinking about a shipment of computers to africa

To get the ball rolling. I was chatting with abc from Nigeria and
sphinx from Ambazonia during the imc global meeting today. It seemed like
it would be a good idea to start discussing a shipment of computers to an
imc in Africa. Things work pretty slowly so starting now for a shipment in
10 months to a year is probally enough lead time.

What do people think of this idea?

For those who don't know, the basic idea is to refurbish old computers in
the US and ship them by the container to imc's in the third world. They
can then use them for setting up indymedia center computer labs but also
to wire and support many social movements and community radio stations.
For Ecuador we shipped 235 computers. For Argentina we will probally be
shipping fewer.

One thing in general is we need to figure out how we decide where
shipments go and in what order. For one thing it's SUPER important that
the people recieving the computers be able to handle them. Both getting
through customs but also the distribution and training. Remember that a
container of computers weighs 8.7 metric tons! If we loose even a SINGLE
container somehow then it will be much harder to get funding to keep the
proejct going.
