IMC and the Boundaries-to Bridges Tour 2003/2004 Almeria/Spain (October 2003) –
St. Louis/Senegal (March 2004)
Dear Comrades, Last time we started a discussion on how to help the development
of IMC in Africa and we had a couple of opinions. Then, the discussion followed
two main ideas : Regional and continent wide meetings and Organising an IMC
Africa tour.
Though the idea of a tour came up on the IMC-Africa list, reference were made to
a previous proposal for an African tour that was sent to imc-finance and
imc-process. During the earlier proposal the estimated bill was extremely big
and that had killed the discussion then. Also on the discussion about an IMC
Organised African tour, a comrade from IMC South Africa pointed-out the danger
of hurriedly putting together imcs that do not have any root in the activists
community in the countries in question. Such imcs he pointed-out have the risk
of not developing to be a grass root or community based project.
On the idea of an African IMC meeting, the question raised was who would attend
seeing that the existing imcs in Africa were very ineffective.
The first and only proposed regional meeting between IMC Ambazonia, IMC Nigeria
and Jay Sands from IMC Philadelphia unfortunately did not hold because of some
sudden changes that occurred in the travelling plans of Jay.
Yet it is still accepted that if the activists in Africa are to be able to be
pulled into the imc-culture some how, they’ve got to be introduced to indymedia
in one way or another.
There is presently an on going preparation for a tour from Europe to Africa by a
group of activists(www.memenet.de/tour). This will be a chance for us to give
the imc Africa project the momentum it needs. We can expose indymedia to the
African activists community during the tour with workshops flyers, stickers,
buttons etc as well as Organise an African IMC meeting within the frame of the
tour say at the end of the tour.
Below is an extract of some ideas that were proposed for discussion during the
last country wide meeting of imc-Germany (as the main preparation of the tour is
being done by a Berlin based group).
-Getting together a concise small brochures about indymedia that could be given
around during the tour and that could serve as a material in workshops during
the tour about indymedia. For this I think there are going to be other activists
from the network who will happily participate especially from the imc-print
project.
- I’ll propose that all African IMCs participate in co-hosting the tour in
their countries.
- We could get a team of techies to participate in the tour or may be give
some basic workshop to those to be involved on the tour.
- If possible Organise a separate indy bus to be involved in the tour from
which we could run our own stuff (streaming, radio, Satellite TV etc).
- Get together some hardware for the tour.
-In the whole it would nice if other activists could participate as well as
contribute ideas on how IMC could effectively use the tour as a platform for
educating African activists about imc.
It will be particularly good if those who participated in the South American
Caravan could share their experiences with us.
-There is one of the preparation meeting of the Boundaries-to Bridges-Tour in
Berlin on the 10th May 2003 in Berlin. If you can it will be nice to have you
there.
