<A HREF=http://www.southport.co.nz/>South Port</a>, and Mainland Stevedores in Bluff, as well as other South Island ports, are the focus of pickets because they represent the worst and most aggressive industrial tactics of the waterfront employers in New Zealand.
<A HREF=http://www.indymedia.org.nz/front.php3?article_id=9294&group=webcast>Industrial action is said to increase</a> at the port of Bluff during this 48 hour Picket.
The Maritime Union says the heart of the issue is decent wages, working conditions and a sustainable industry, all of which are being put under threat by rogue operators such as Mainland.
Support for the picket has also been offer from the
<A HREF="http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/PO0307/S00082.htm">Rail and Maritime Transport Union</a>(RTMU), and the <A HREF=http://www.nzctu.org.nz/news/176.html>CTU</a>.
Mainland Stevedores have cotinually been the focus of industrial action<A HREF="http://www.labournet.net/docks2/0011/nzbluff2.htm">1</a>,<A HREF="http://www.themilitant.com/2001/6507/650710.html">2</a>,<A HREF="http://www.converge.org.nz/watchdog/96/4thefi.htm">3</a>.
RTMU say their members at the Bluff port are employed under a casual contract. They are paid $9.92 an hour and haven't had a pay rise for 11 years.
