Without The Alliance In Government, The Labour Party Has Been Able To Lift
The GM Moratorium. Alliance Absolutely Opposes The Lifting Of The Moratorium
On GM.
The Alliance GE Spokesperson Vernon Tile said "the Alliance totally opposes
the lifting of the moratorium on field trials and commercial release of
genetically modified organisms (GMO's) from midnight on October 29." "The
Alliance remains absolutely opposed to the release of genetically modified
organisms GMO's unless and until science proves it will not have
environmental impacts that will cost New Zealand dearly years down the
track. The Alliance strongly believes that the precautionary principle is
the best approach. With the lifting of the moratorium, New Zealand now faces
a very uncertain and hazardous economic and environmental future."
Vernon Tile stated, "it is only because the Alliance was in Government with
Labour that New Zealand was able to get a moratorium on the release of
genetically modified organisms (GMO's). Without the Alliance in Government,
the Labour Party has been able to lift the GM moratorium and simply ignore
the views and real concerns of the overwhelming majority of New Zealanders
opposed to GM."
The Alliance is committed to working with other organisations and New
Zealanders to make sure that the opposition to GM in our country continues
and that we wage a campaign to keep a GE-Free future for New Zealand.
Therefore, the Alliance supports the People's Moratorium that has been
launched today. The People's Moratorium campaign "to get the public to
declare their regions and properties GE free zones; to demand that food
companies continue to remove GE ingredients from their products; and to
formally and creatively challenge any applications to grow GE crops in New
Zealand" are active and positive steps for New Zealanders to stop the
release of GE organisms. The aim of the People's Moratorium to get New
Zealanders to impose our own ban and moratorium on GE is a constructive step
to protect our national interest, both economically and environmentally.
