Hi all,
Instead of me writing a huge howto about ed work on the site, it's
probably best for ed people to read through the docs contained in the ed
section.
So far only Clare, Kieran and me have access to the ed section - it's at
http://indymedia.org.nz/editor. If you do ed work, create a login and
I'll assign you ed privileges.
I'm still working through the finer points of how things work, it's a
pretty complex setup - but basically the main changes are:
* features and editorial work have converged - everything is done
through the editor interface.
* everyone can edit to a extent - people can assign ratings to articles. Anything
rated at -6 is hidden, anything rated at 60 or above automatically
becomes a feature. Editors have more weighting in how they vote, and
can still hide stuff themselves.
* people with logins can set default thresholds for viewing articles,
so people with a threshold of 2 will only see articles with a rating
of 2 or higher. The default threshold is 0 - but logically it should
be set to -6, so people will see everything that isn't hidden? I'm a
bit hazy, we can alter it if necessary.
* editors can make articles into features by hitting the 'make this a
feature' button in article options. This requires other editors to
approve it too. It is set to make a feature with approvel from 2 editors.
I'm guessing that the server will email the editorial list when
something goes up for approval, this could get confusing . . but I'm
sure we can force dada to email the features list.
* when an article is deleted or hidden, the reason and username of the
editor is displayed above the article. The server will also email the
user.
* articles can be 'deleted', that is, they can be moved to a secret area
only accessible by other editors. You can also properly delete articles
from the database. Before anyone starts ranting about the death of
indymedia or something, this is useful for removing things such as
test articles. I removed about 100mb in test video and audio files
when I set the site up. The ability to keep articles in a secret
hidden section is useful if your not entirely sure if you really want
to nuke something, and just want it out of the way. It's also really
helpful if we ever get sued, and want to make an article disappear
while we get legal advice :)
I spent a while today recatergorising articles, and un/ticking the 'of local
interest' boxes - presumably this will become less of a mission as
people become used to the new layout.
So a bit of thinking needs to be done towards the way we work - any
alterations to the site are welcome.
