Kia ora koutou,

Sorry to take so long to address this but I have had other
things on my plate.

I'd still like to do the 'openness vs. usefullness' feature
I suggested, I will post a proposal on the features list
soon. I don't think we should be handing out an any final
solutions until this the wider AIM community has had a
chance to comment on the situation. I would hate to think of
the AIM collective behaving like so many of New Zealand's
local bodies, holding phoney consultations on decisions that
have already been made and effectively actioned.

Quoting clare <clare at animal-liberation.org.nz>:

>> this is the letter i propose we send to DK if the ed list
approves. <<

I have rewritten this. Clare's original is here:
http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/imc-aotearoa-ed/2003-December/001122.html

I was about to write that we (ed collective) will empower
our tech volunteers to prevent DK posting to the site. Then
I realized we really need the consensus of the full group to
ban someone (ed policy should also be altered accordingly
and ratified at the next conference). I suggest that once
the ed collective agrees on the content and wording of this
letter it should be sent to imc-aotearoa to be discussed.

If Don is on imc-aotearoa and if he replies to the list the
archives will show he has been part of a discussion warning
him to pull his head in and explaining why. If he posts
another piece of abuse on the site after said discussion I
think it would be fair to implement a total ban (but with a
fixed time limit - 3-6 months?). Again I don't think it
would be appropriate to do any of this until we have put up
the feature and invited the broadest range of input on how
to balance open-publishing with safety of media space.

I would like to reiterate the suggestion of a subedit list
that he would still be able to post to and I personally
volunteer to admin said list and place his postings on the
newswire once they have been suitable subedited (meaning
clarified, evidence attached and personal attacks removed).

BTW Adding PS to emails on the features list is not the
proper way to inform the ed collective of having hidden
something. Let's not get sloppy about process people, we
define it for a reason and the SF debacle gives us an
extreme example of what happens when we don't respect it.

**************

Kia ora Don,

This email is a formal warning that if you use the
open-publishing facilities on indymedia.org.nz (AIM) to post
any further abusive comments, the Aotearoa Indymedia
collective will empower our tech volunteers to prevent you
from posting to the site.

This solution would set an unfortunate precedent and the
decision would not be taken lightly but as well as
facilitating free speech and discussion, AIM's stated goals
include being a useful and safe media space for all
activists (see points 2 and 4 of our editorial policy
<http://www.indymedia.org.nz/edpolicy.php3>). For this to be
achieved, postings and comments should focus criticism on
the arguments and evidence put forward by other participants
in the discussion rather than using aggressive language to
make personal criticisms of those participants. Comments and
postings that attack indymedia volunteers or others using
the site will not be tolerated for any reason.

Previous requests from indymedia volunteers and other AIM
users to moderate your language and attitude have been
ignored and we feel we are left with no other option but to
make this your final warning.

In solidarity,
the Aotearoa Indymedia collective
