Kia ora Stu,
Hope you don't mind me cc'ing this to some other indymedia techs.
Quoting stu <stu at ihug.co.nz>:
>> I and Zelka looked into the idea of consoidating all our various [GE
email] lists, into 2 or so national ones. I particularly wanted to get away
from using Yahoo, or other free commercial systems because of their
unreliability and possibility they could can or change the service at any
time <<
I agree. I've been struggling with this problem for a while. Properly
managed email lists are a very effecting way of keeping communication
flowing but you're right that the "free" commercial services are less than
adequate.
>> So I looked into listservs. Half the ISPs in auckland I talked to didn't
know what I meant! I looked at a couple of free NGO listservs but one is
currently looking for funding and may continue to do so for ages and the
other (converge.org.nz) doesnt do it anymore. <<
You don't have to work hard to convince me of the importance of
independantly run listservers to activist communications. Indymedia uses
email lists for all sorts of things and I have run lists for a number of
other activist groups at different times.
I have a hard time believing this isn't a single listserver running the
whole country but if there are they certainly don't seem keen to help
penniless activists out.
>> Looked at overseas ones but are too much. <<
Which ones have you looked at? Have you tried mutualaid.org, riseup.net or
onlinepolicy.org? Some of them might be prepared to offer free services if
some of us offer voluntary tech time?
Closer to home I assume the CAT collective in Sydney (who host the Aotearoa
Indymedia site) have a listserver.
>> ANd finally toyed with the idea of setting one up on a machine but don't
have the 24hr pipe to do it well. <<
There are a number of possibilities here. I have a friend who runs computers
at Waikato University who might be able to put it on their network. Then
those of us doing admin can SSH into it from wherever.
Also Bobo who is involved with the ECCO collective in Orkland has access to
free bandwidth and might be able to help.
Maybe we should set up an email list for people who want to help set up an
Aotearoa listservice ;)
