There's a lot of information about open source multimedia (file formats, 
streaming etc) here:

One of Xiphs projects is a speech-compression format called Speex. Using 
this for interviews etc rather than .ogg or .mp3 might allow us to get 
higher-quality audio from smaller files for the spoken parts of our radio 
streams.
