Saturday, August 9, 7-8:30 pm Nagasaki commemoration
Location: Carter Center at the circle with the flags, and move to the
nearby rose garden at about 7:30. A commemoration of the nuclear weapons
explosion on the city of Nagasaki, Japan on August 9, 1945. Plans are still
being made but we will likely hear speakers during the first 1/2 hour at the
flag circle, then become quieter as we reflect on our action against
civilians 58 years ago. The only two nuclear weapons used in war were used
on civilian cities. While there will be space to distribute literature, we
intend this to be respectful of the gravity of the event and of the
potential we possess to repeat it with the weapons still in our US
stockpile. Additional plans are underway, and we invite input. Contact: Ed

August 10-11, Free Funk Day
Stephen Funk, courageous military objector during the US attack on Iraq now
faces two years in the brig for opposing war and speaking out. Stephen is
scheduled to face a military tribunal in New Orleans on August 11 for
desertion-even though he returned to his unit after completing his
conscientious objector paperwork on April 1. He was moved to Louisiana in
order to isolate him from supporters, which makes it very important that we
build support from here in Atlanta. This Marine put everything on the line
to say "not in my name" and "not by my hands." Now we need to step up to
defend him. Vigils, demonstrations and meetings are being organized to make
make August 11 "Free Funk" day around the country. NION Atlanta is
organizing van transportation to New Orleans for a support action on August
11, leaving Atlanta Sunday night August 10 and returning Monday night August
11. The cost will be approximately $30. Please email to reserve a seat. We
will also be planning a local support event here. For more info on Stephen's
case and his most recent statement: <http://www.notinourname.net/funk>

Friday August 1, 2003 8pm "Afghan Massacre: The Convoy of Death"
Presented by Atlanta Indymedia <http://www.atlanta.indymdeia.org>
www.atlanta.indymdeia.org and WRFG (89.3fm) at the Little 5 Points Community
Center. (Corner of Austin Ave. and Euclid Ave. in Atlanta). Although this
film has been aired in Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada and Australia, and
has been screened by the European parliament, no major news networks in the
US have covered the story, or broadcast the film. This film was recently
broadcast simultaneously on over 140 Radio and Cable Public Access Stations,
Satellite TV and the Internet, marking its first and largest U.S. showing.
It is now being screened by Independent Media Organizations across the U.S.
Produced and directed by Irish filmmaker and former BBC producer Jamie
Doran, the film tells the story of thousands of prisoners who surrendered to
the US military¹s Afghan allies after the siege of Kunduz. According to
witness testimony doccumented in the film, around 3,000 of the prisoners
were put into metal containers to be transported to a prison. U.S.-allied
Afghan soldiers fired into the containers to make ventalation holes after
the prisoners were loaded into them, killing many. Upon arrival at the
prison, and the opening of the containers, U.S. Special Forces re-directed
the containers into the desert and stood by as the remaining living were
shot and buried in a mass grave. The Atlanta IMC and WRFG FM present a Free
Film Screening on the first Friday of each month. Contact Carol at
