standard of living, fight for job security, and protect workers' right
to organize. JwJ's core belief is that in order to be successful,
workers' rights struggles have to be part of a larger campaign for

local coalitions that connect labor, faith-based, community, and student
organizations to work together on workplace and community social justice
campaigns.

Monday, January 19, 6:30 pm, Atlanta Bill of Rights Defense Campaign
VICTORY CELEBRATION and meeting at Amnesty International (131 Ponce de
Leon Suite #220) 1. SOCIAL, CONVERSATION, ENTERTAINMENT * Light
refreshments & beverages. *Special, Surprise Flamenco Artist *(Bring a
snack or hor d'oeuvre to share) 2. PLANNING The Bush Administration
continues its assault on civil liberties. For example, over the holidays
the FBI collected over 270,000 names for its databases, demanding that
airlines turn over information on all passengers flying into Las Vegas
and that hotels provide them with their guest registers. This was done
on the basis of a "national security letter" signed by John Ashcroft
with no judicial oversight or review. This is but one example of this
practice, expanded and now "legal", under the 2004 Intelligence
Authorization bill passed by congress and signed by President Bush.
Piece by piece the administration is attempting to adopt many of the
measures in the Patriot II proposal, an initiative that was widely
criticized and rejected when it was leaked about a year ago. How do we
respond? What goals should we set for the coming year? Among the
possibilities are encouragement and support of resolutions in other
communities; community and house meetings to reach new people;
coordination with other organizations and campaigns in Atlanta and
Georgia; support for legislative measures to rollback the Patriot Act
and to fight new initiatives that curtail civil liberties, etc., etc.

A note about posting to the Peace & Justice Calendar
We welcome all peace and justice issue event announcements. If you like
to have your event posted please email it in a format similar to the
calendar listings.
Day of the week, Date, time, event title, location, event description,
sponsor, contact info (and whatever additional info you like, space is
limited)
Fancy flyers, especially PDFs, make compiling the calendar much more
time consuming- and in a pinch things might not make it up.
Calendar deadline: Sunday before the week you want it to run.
