MEDIA ADVISORY - Tuesday June 29, 2004 - 3:30 pm

Senator Vincent Fort to Address Corrections about Violence at Lee
Arrendale State Prison

WHAT: Georgia Department of Corrections Board Meeting, a
presentation on the conditions at Lee Arrendale State Prison

WHEN: Thursday, July 1, 2004, 10:00a.m.

WHERE: Board of Department of Corrections
Sloppy Floyd Building
2 Martin Luther King Dr., S.E.
East Tower, 8th Floor
Atlanta, GA 30334
(Downtown Atlanta, across the street from the State Capitol)

WHO: Senator Vincent Fort will appear in front of the Board of
Corrections to inform its members of the violence that permeates daily
life at Lee Arrendale State prison (Arrendale), as well as to ask that
the DOC do what's necessary to make the prison safe for all inmates,
young and old. Attorney Stephen Bright, director of the Southern Center
for Human Rights, will also be on hand to comment of his offices
investigations into the conditions at Arrendale..

WHY: The officials at Arrendale, located in Alto, GA, have
failed to protect the children and adults who are housed at the
facility. Stabbings, rapes, and other forms of violence are a daily
part of life for our state's youngest prisoners. Since the rape and
murder of Wayne Boatwright, an 18 year-old young man who was killed at
the prison on February 22, 2004, there have been at least 20 documented
violent incidents at Arrendale. The Board needs to know that officials
and citizens across the State are outraged about what is happening at a
facility that is supposed to rehabilitate our children.

Senator Fort and Mr. Bright will be available at
the conclusion of the meeting for additional comments.
