Subject: [IMC-bristol] BIMC film night - suggestions needed
hello
I've provisionally booked the Cube cinema http://www.cubecinema.com/ for September 23rd for the first Bristol indymedia film + discussion night. The cube collective are enthusiastic to do this and have offered the space to us for a 50/50 box office split - a good deal as this means we don't have to worry about out laying any cash up front...
great!
I think that we could do these screenings every month if we so wanted but would need to an interesting program + speakers to draw people in to the cinema.
i think a monthly night would be great and totally agree that we'd need to keep it interesting to pull in people, also agree that a mix of speakers and films would be good
Posters need putting up + press releases need to go out on time...
if posters are ready in advance, cube volunteers seem good at distributing them around and about - this would be dead helpful
i'd be happy to coordinate press releases with the cube
As 2-3 BIMC volunteers are working at the cube now this should be an easy event to do + sustain. I would like to do this programme as well in Bath ( at the Hat + feather, Walcot st http://walcotstreet.com/ ) + there is interest from Easton Community Centre www.eastonca.org to run a film night there ( if there is enough volunteers to do so...)
this would be great, good way of using our various venue contacts and i reckon each place gets a different crowd - mebbe some cross-over between cube and easton but not much... and as i think you said before ian, means we can coordinate publicity, posters etc to promote all three venues etc.
So now is the time to suggest films / speakers to put on... It would be prudent to try and program about 4-5 months worth in one session. Would themed nights be a good idea ? If so, what themes ? + what films ?
I would like to see a mixed program that contains both local community films ( that might not get a public screening ) mixed with activist stuff + a decent, interesting feature documentary that you wouldn't see on TV...+ interesting speakers if they are available...
==================================================================
My ideas for the first programme are as follows :
2 x local community shorts ( pru ? Knowle west media...) 20 mins
sounds good to me
European indymedia newsreal http://newsreal.indymedia.de/: 25 mins
yep, finally saw this at green gathering and think its a good intro to the wider imc / likeminded groups networks...
main feature : Human shields ( Platform films ) 58 mins - press release below...
looks good
So lets hear your ideas - would it be a good idea to ask somebody from the Purdown campaign to speak about there battle with the developers ?? or maybe the St pauls comminity partnership ??
if either of these groups can make it would be a good inclusion in the mix of stuff i think, but if not then still a good line-up
I have to give the cube cinema copy for the programme with in the next 2-3 days so a quick response would be appreciated.
cheers
ian
==========================================================
Platform Films, makers of anti-war films including "Not In My Name" and
"Proud Arabs and Texan Oilmen" have completed a new film, THE HUMAN SHIELDS which we hope to distribute as widely as possible to help mobilise
opposition to the US/UK occupation of Iraq.
In January 2003 around 25 people got in three London double-decker buses and
set out for Iraq. Their aim was to stop a war. Our film follows their journey across Europe, Turkey and Syria to Baghdad.
They receive huge support along the way and they inspire hundreds of other
people to become human shields. En route there are problems with the press
and disputes over the leadership.
After their 3000 mile drive they enter Iraq and discover the disturbing realities of a country suffering from the effects of sanctions, killer diseases and the depleted uranium weapons used in the first Gulf War.
There are disagreements between some shields and the Iraqi regime. Some go
home, but around 140 stay. They describe the impact of the US-led bombing
and invasion. The film contains one shield¹s own footage of the bombardment.
The film asks what difference did the human shields make? Did they save lives? Did they affect the conduct of the war?
Beta SP/VHS/DV 58 minutes June 2003.
