Practically, we could simply remove the comment form from the page. It
would be still be cached for old pages - I guess it is possible to
refresh them all, but that's a bit more tricky.
We could replace the page that the comment form goes to, with a message
of some kind.
We could allow comments but make them hidden by default. [personally I
find the show comments bit so slow that I would never look at it -
maybee reducing the number on the page would speed it up...?]
There's not much difference between the way comments and articles are
posted, so I guess someone could cheat if they were really clever. I
light of the current problem, that seems unlikely :)
Re ratings in the new site - I only said it was 'unlikely' because I get
the general feeling that most people are against this.
However, if it was simple and usefull, then allowing volunteers and / or
readers to rate articles, dissent against articles, could actually
involve more people in quite a good way. There's also the facility to
create a 'registered user' and then set your own 'threshold' - so you
could choose to see only the really good articles and none of the junk
if you wanted.
There's no real tech nightmare, because the thing has been written
already by dadaIMC [spud] and it seems to work really well, and be
fairly easy to configure in loads of different ways. Seems like roughly
half the imcs are now moving to this, and half to mir. Check the
website http://www.dadaimc.org - there's good instructions and help
files for all of this stuff.
Also, they are really helpfull on the mailing list, so we can probably
get assistance if we need it.
