PARTY IN THE SQUARE


UNISON, the biggest Trade Union in Britain is celebrating its 10th   
Birthday with a party in Queen Square at 2 pm on 12th July.

Liz Ring, Bristol City UNISON|s Branch Secretary,  said that |This is a   
chance for UNISON members and other citizens of Bristol to have some fun,   
listen to the bands and a rally emphasising the importance of public   
services and the role of trade unions|.

Activities organised for the afternoon include a performance by African   
Drummers, street entertainers, children|s face painting, bouncy castles   
and a beer tent.  Local musicians in the Bristol Brass Band, the well   
known Latin American band |Los Bambinos| and the radical folk group   
|Seize the Day| will be on stage.

Ian Ducat, UNISON|s Regional Secretary, said that |We will be setting   
free a thousand balloons to signify the importance of the occasion and   
the forward movement of UNISON and the importance of public services.|

UNISON represents 1.2 million workers in Britain.  In Bristol we have   
members in the local council working in schools, social services, housing   
and many other areas.  In the local Hospitals, Colleges, Universities,   
the Fire Service, Police Force, Ambulance Service and the Water and Power   
industries.  These total approximately 14 thousand members in Bristol.
