hi folks,

below is a first call out for alt media folks to participate in sorting an
independent media centre for the dsei protests in london in september

some of us have been chatting and plotting to sort out a basic structure
- there's some info on a twiki page
(http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/UkDseiMediaCentre)
now we need to see who's up for getting their hands dirty :)

we're sending this call out to indymedia folks and inviting other alt media
people as well

we'll do another more general call for participation once we know more about
the space and the projects going ahead - would be good to sign it with a
list of participating media groups as well

the original dsei trip had been looking for a big space to do a full on
convergence centre thing and the media centre could have been there, but
that's fallen thru so now folks are looking at several spaces with things
split out across them - folks are gonna be doing a few screenings, but
there could be more screenings and an exhibition as well, ideas include
radio streaming which some folks are working on and video streaming.

btw the initial media proposal doc linked from
http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/UkDseiMediaCentre was written when we
thought that there would be one single large warehouse convergence space
with the media centre inside it - so it may sound a little paranoid :) we'd
also just come back from evian g8.

people are looking at a space today
also trying to sort a few others as well eg having presence in local church
hall etc

there will be a meeting this saturday if the space gets the go ahead
(we'll know by wednesday) - it's to go through what to use space for
and what we then need and discuss the other projects within - not expecting
you to come :-) but we'll post notes from it - we'll have another get
together in august as well and no doubt a few smaller ones in between :)

we'll keep people updated with what's planned and where help is needed

in solidarity,
ciao,
dave

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

INDEPENDENT MEDIA CENTRE for DSEi

This is a call out for participation and collaboration on an Indymedia media
centre for the week long mobilisations against the DSEi arms fair (Defence
Systems Exhibition International) in London's docklands 6th - 12th September
2003 (see www.dsei.org).

Your help is needed!

The week of events against the arms fair includes a two day conference, film
screenings, vigils, a march in central london, and two days of actions (one
specifically with non- violent guidelines) and a Street Party. So far there
are over 30 groups planning to participate in the protests. Alongside these
protests we need help to establish a physical Indymedia space with room for
many projects within it.

Your ideas are needed.

At the moment it is likely that the main media space will be within a legal
space which may also be used for the conference, as well as legal team hq
and hold an info-point for the week (although this space is as yet
unconfirmed). There may also be other spaces as well.

Beyond providing net connected computers for people to use and setting up
reporting structures to update the indymedia website, other desired projects
include running a live radio stream during the week (with the possibility of
some legal FM rebroadcast), as well as streaming video coverage.

==============

How you can help!

We need people who can work on the media centre, bring ideas or their own
projects into the centre.

We need specific help with the radio and video streaming projects.

We need volunteers to report from the streets and help the wheels of
information turn...

and volunteers to help co-ordinate volunteers (no honest!)

==============

What Happens Next?

A small group of indy folk and people from other groups have been putting
some proposals together for how the whole thing might work and scoping
some of the projects and requirements.

But we can't pull it off on our own.

At the moment there are a few initial proposals texts (see below) and we are
working on securing spaces and resources.

We propose to hold an initial get together to discuss practicalities in
london soon. This will be followed by another gathering in august and start
of september.

You can see the initial proposals and ideas at:
http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/UkDseiMediaCentre

Some Background:

To read more on DSEI see: www.dsei.org

Indymedia folks and a huge number of other alt media suspects have
participated in imc media centres across the world covering large summit
mobilisations, but not here at home... J18 (the carnival against capitalism)
in 1999 saw the widest collaboration of media activists around a single
protest, and indeed gave birth to indymedia via the australian j18 web crew
and Seattle...

Since then we've seen small low key media centres and some good streaming
projects that have covered protests, but nothing on the same scale...

It's time to reclaim our media!
