Shariff, sorry I've been off the air for nearly a month - just sent my
letter, totally changed. I am sorry to hear you are crying, I can barely
believe this is not a nightmare, honestly, nine days on, and something within
me feels none of it is real - below is the letter I wrote:
It is not possible to fight tyranny with tyranny or replace one dictatorship
for another. It is not possible to turn a deaf ear to those thousands of
children that are being terrorised day and night, we would not want this to
happen to our own children.
The effort of discharging your duty, namely upholding the princniples upon
which the United Nations was founded, cannot possibly be more painful than
the pain of the families of the dead soldiers on both sides.
If we allow this war to continue then we are sending a signal to all those
countries that have fire power telling them that 'might is right' - could you
imagine the implications now that weapons of mass distruction are to be found
all over the world?
It would be an utter disgrace to all of us if we are to be the generation to
spark the Third World War, it would be unforgiven selfishness to turn our
backs on what is just, legal and right. I am a helpless citizen and my voice
goes unheard, but you can make all the difference: Please, think of all the
lives you can save, think of reliving those times when the world was not
glued to their TV sets, concerned about what might come next. I appeal to
your humanity and ask you to support invoking General Assembly resolution
377A, Uniting for Peace, to end the war on Iraq.
Shariff, all the best, hope next time we communicate, we would have some good
news.
Ghada
