COMMONWEALTH FM - Multicultural Community Radio
Celebrating Bristol=92s multicultural society and making links between the=
=20
different communities in the city
Commonwealth FM is looking for studio managers and radio producers to=20
assist in the running of and training of personnel for our community radio=
=20
station,=92 which is scheduled to run between Saturday 4th and Saturday 25th=
=20
October 2003, at the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum, Bristol.
Last year the Museum ran the radio station - broadcasting live twenty-four=
=20
hours a day for three weeks from our purpose built radio studio on the=20
museum floor.
Commonwealth FM worked with community groups, colleges of further=20
education, schools and individuals. Over two hundred people were involved.=
=20
Radio production training was offered at The Museum and a number of=20
community and resource centres in the city. Most of the groups covered=20
issues faced by their own communities, however the younger adults made=20
radio about popular culture like everyone else.
It=92s the best thing to have, it=92s the first of it=92s kind the people in=
the=20
community love it cos its multi racial
Tony Sikhosana Morning Presenter
We broadcast in Punjabi, Somali, Cantonese and Arabic and English.
For three weeks in October Bristol could tune into 87.7FM and be delighted=
=20
and surprised at what they heard.
The project began to gather it=92s own momentum as we neared broadcast=20
date individuals simply arrived at the museum having heard about the radio=
=20
project. As far as possible everyone got airtime.
It was a very good experience=85we have had a lot of requests from our=20
community to do it again.
Aziz Chowdrey, Bangladesh Association
Bristol is a multicultural city, but not intercultural. Ethnic groups are=20
divided and live in separate parts of the city. For many people the=20
facilities of the city centre are simply out of bounds. Commonwealth FM=20
broke down barriers not just by the content of radio programmes, but also=
=20
by the enormous variety of different ages, nationalities and cultures=20
working together.
The premise of Commonwealth FM was to make radio programmes we did this=20
but also, we also believe, combated individual prejudice by truly working=20
together.
The Music=92s better, the talk more interesting than anything you=92d ever=
hear=20
on local commercial radio. Retune that dial for a while people!
