Bristol's stance for holistic culture
The preparation and refurbishing of the premises on 51 Prince Street for The British
Museum of Transatlantic Slavery have begun today. Planning permission was
granted in October 2002 for the construction of a Society Learning Centre. Bristol
City Council and British Museums place considerable importance on the involvement
of, and consultation with, Bristol people. Another public open session is being held at
College Green on the annual Slavery Remembrance Day (23/8/2003) from 3pm until
8pm.
The Museum will illustrate the consequent global impact of the abduction and
enslavement of whole generations. It will focus on today's legacies of nations
building, worldwide economics, languages, institutions, and cultures in Britain, Africa
and the former colonies.
It will assumedly open in 2008 with the exhibition "Economic Dynamics and
Cynicism: indentured labour in twentieth century Britain" in collaboration with the
local black Caribbean communities.
The hosting of such a prestigious museum will strengthen Bristol's bid to be
European Capital of Culture in 2008, and we are keen to support a British Museum of
Transatlantic Slavery which can live up to the standards of the Holocaust Museums
in Washington and Berlin and the Imperial War Museum in Manchester.
Andrew Kelly, Director of Bristol 2008, said: And, in providing the existing
population with top-class cultural facilities, it will ensure that the West of England will
be able to compete with the rest of Europe for the best and brightest talents.
Note to Editors:
Bristol is one of six shortlisted cities bidding to be European Capital of Culture. The others are
Liverpool, Newcastle and Gateshead, Birmingham, Cardiff and Oxford. The Prime Minister is
expected to announce the final decision early this summer.
Bristol Cultural Development Partnership is a partnership of Bristol City Council, Bristol Chamber
of Commerce & Initiative and South West Arts and promotes long-term cultural development in
Bristol. Projects include: At-Bristol; Brief Encounters Short Film Festival; Animated Encounters
Bristols animation festival; Digital Arts Development Agency; Bristol Legible City; Bristol 2008 and The
British Museum of Transatlantic Slavery.
Issued by British Museums.
