EUROPEAN WEEK OF MONITORING 17-23 Nov 2003
Briefing note

Thank you for offering to take part in the week of monitoring of media
coverage of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. Our results will be
released in March 2004 to coincide with the launch of similar surveys
taking place in a dozen European countries. The results from across Europe
will be launched during a Week of Action designed to promote better public
understanding of why people flee their homes in search of safety and the
benefits they bring to the host countries. I will send you details later
this month.

I have attached a survey form for you to print off as many copies as you
need and fill in for each day of the monitoring and for as many local
and\or national newspapers as you are able to cover. We are not at this
stage monitoring television or radio although we have plans to do so in the
future.

The survey form is straight forward and designed so that the information
you provide can be input with ease. My advice is that you monitor no more
papers than you would normally. If it’s a daily paper that is fine, it is a
Sunday or weekly paper that is equally helpful. Some people have said they
will monitor more than one title and that is appreciated.

I think the form is self explanatory but you will need a ruler as you go
through the pages in order to measure the length of articles and headlines
and size of photographs. The judgement about the tone of the story is
simply yours as you reflect on it after reading the newspaper.

Language is a serious problem in much of the media coverage and I will be
interested to see which words turn out to be the most used in the section
on ‘key words’. It will be interesting to see who the media usually quotes
in its stories.

At the end of the Week of Monitoring please return all of your forms to the
address at the bottom of the survey form. Thank you for taking part in what
is the first-ever European-wide examination of the media coverage of
refugees and asylum seekers and you will of course all get an electronic
copy of the results.
Terry Williams,
National Co-ordinator,
Refugees, Asylum Seekers and the Media Project.
