Hi,
this is following the discussion on imc-uk-features list about an aeh
suggested Arabic posting we don't understand and if to hide that.
Might it be possible that Imc Bristol has links with Arabic speaking people
who might be willing to help us out there?
My opinion on the thread of discussion:
I do think we need to hide posts we don't understand, and also if they are
not widely spoken in the area we cover.
So there is the difference between e.g. Spanish and German - there are
adequate indymedia and translation facilities in indymedia, so posts in
these languages should go on e.g. Indymedia Germany or some Indymedia in
Spain.
However, it would be great if we could extent languages which are actually
spoken here in our communities, such like Urdu,Bengali, and Arabic, Gaelic
and whatelse.
It might be good if we could have some people at hand we could ask (some
kind of "volunteer indymedia consultant") when these posts turn up in the
newswire - for Arabic, we had an indymedia volunteer a while ago in
Edinburgh who studied it at university, and also there might be people at
the outskirts of indymedia we could consult.
Will try to wade though the imc-uk-contact list and see if I could find any
Arabic speaker translation offer - also will dig out the 2 Araioc speaker
who turned up around or are sympathetic to indymedia before and see what
they suggest.
This might take a while however, so would propose to hide non-english
languages, which are though spoken here in Britain after they drop out of
the newswire 2-3 days later after posting, just as a sign we would welcome
these in principle?
We could also add something to the publish form, saying we would in
principle welcome other language postings, which are relevant to the people
in the geographic area we cover.. but that we might have to hide it if we
can't find an interpretor and would welcome foreign language postings
accompanied with an english translation?
Might it be possible that Imc Bristol has links with Arabic speaking people
who might be willing to help us out there?
cheers Ulla
