Hello all! the Indymedia Africa working group made a request for financial
support in paying the fair of the other indymedia Africa activists to come to
Dakar Senegal for the Alternative(indymedia) Conference and to cover basic
conference cost. Detilas below
With the many other global South indymedias all over the world it was thought
that efforts need be made to reduce the net impact of this request on IMC-finance.
Thus there was the concept to ask local imcs to participate in the funding
initiative from the local level. The following ideas did come to play :
1-That Local Imcs write a call for donations and place it on their website
2-That local imcs can decide to adopt one of the African delegates and embark on
raising funds to take responsibility for that particular delegate’s transport.
3-That Local imcs contribute as much as they can.

Normally I had to write this mail to you since last week and was to report the
out come of the various responses to imc-finance on Monday next week. I’ll
greatly appreciate if by Monday you could express your stand on this issue so
that I can update imc-finance of the stand of things.
Best regards
Sphinx

Detail information of delegates transport cost:

Imc-Africa Working group is asking imc-finance to support with the fairs of the
African delegates, food and stationery for the Dakar Conference .
-In the coming days we'll continue with trying to raise funds through other
sources. We appeal to all the activts as well as imcs in this list to use their
know-how in helping us in this process of fund raising as well as spreading the
information to potential sources of support.
-We will implore the imc-finance working group to treat this as an application
for funds. That is 3days tranlation, 14days discussion(dateline is then 3rd
february2004).
All funds that we happen to get in the interim, we'll inform imc-finance about
and hope imc-finance can make up the needed amount. Every funds that We shall
get in the interim shall go first for the tickets. This is all meant to
catch-up with time as most of the African delegates need to get visas to go to
Senegal.
-We are pleading with all imcs to put a temporary donation link(button) in this
respect on their various websites.

The Dakar Conference

In the four years since indymedia started in Seattle in 1999, it has succeeded
to make a mostest impact on the media worlds as a whole and in the political
left scene in particular.

Much of the build-up have taken place in the global North thanks to the well
developed multimedia infrastructure. Which allows
for both quick and cheap production of media content. Yet indymedias in South
America have made substantial progress despite poor multimedia infrastructure.
This characteristic growth being partly due to existing social support
structures developed over the years of social struggles in South America as well
as emphatic support of Global North Activists.
In Africa for lots of resons indymedia development has been very slow. To give
the indymedia growth process in Africa a push, the indymedia Africa working
group with other activists groups took upon Organising an Alternative(indymedia)
Conference in Dakar from the 1st to the 14th March 2004.
Delegates will be coming from ; South Africa, Ambazonia
(Ex-British Southern Cameroons), DRCongo, Angola, Kenya, Madiaq (South Spain and
Morocco), Nertherland, Germany, Switzerland, UK and USA. Three quarters of the
delegates will be from Africa.
The main point of the Conference will be to exchange experiences and try to
figure-out the way forward with indymedia in Africa despite the lack of suitable
social support structures and multimedia infrastructure.
This undertaking is now threatened by the lack of funds to cover the fairs of
the African Delegates and basic needs for the conference . We are hereby soliciting
for donations to support the Conference.

Update of the situation:
-Fair situation for the moment looks as follows:
3South Africa = 877*3= 2631 Euro
3Ambazonia(Ex-British Southern Cameroons)=750*3= 2250 Euro
1 DRCongo =1200 Euro
2 Angola =1100*2=2200 Euro
3Kenya=1100*3=3300 Euro
2Madiaq(Spain and Morocco) = 450 *2=900 Euro
Total= 12481 Euro

-Feeding and stationery for the 14days of the conference will cost at least
1300Euros.

TOTAL=12481+1300=15481 Euros

-Materials for use in workshops:
.Bak from Imc-ch is bring a computer with a portable content management system
and a host of other software.
.Tony from imc-uk is also going to send us some videos and some other meterials.
In the worst case scenerio this may be all we may have like equipment ´; thus
the best way to increase the utility will be to connect them to a projector.
Thus we desperately need a projector as well as a printer.

---original list of needs was :

-A beamer /projector
1.-Five computers (at least)
2.-Three video recording machines and a video editting machine. 100 video
cassettes.
3.-Three mini-disc recorder/audio recording machines. 200 pieces of
mini-disc/tapes.
4.-Three printers.
5.-5 small radio transmitters.
6.- 10 video cassettes of films made by other indymedia video working groups to
be used in screening .
Software needs
1.-We need to ask indymedia-tech to load the computers for use in the tour with
one of the many freesoftware Operating System.
2.-Need a portable version of an indymedia production system which allows
articles and other content to be published and produced on the computer without
internet connection.
3.-We need an easy to use audio editing program.
4.-We need an easy to use video editing program.
5.-We need an easy to use lay-out program.
