to the imc women.
imagine a situation where one of your female friends has seen or heard sexist comment at work from a colleague. he has been asked to stop but has instead stepped up his campaign of misogyny. a complaint has been made but the 'employers' have decided that this man is important to the job, and instead of disciplining him, they have asked the women to just ignore his comments, rise above it, etc, thereby making it perfectly clear how little they understand the issue of gender hate and its everyday effects on women.
how would you advise such a woman? would you tell her to quit? would you tell her that their policy stinks?
i would, personally, advise her to raise support with the other women at work, and together all the women 'down tools' until the issue is taken seriously and the misogynist man dealt with firmly and promptly.
as long as bimc keeps zaskar on and he is allowed to behave this way, other women will be put off coming to bimc. we should not have to suffer his hate rants, and you should not have to work with a man who feels that this is an appropriate way to speak. the only way the men you share this project with will understand how vile and damaging sexism really is, is if the women they trust and respect (such as yourselves) stand together and make it clear they will not work alongside such views. i suggest that if zaskar wants to stay on bimc, he should have to make a full and unpatronising or sarcastic (his specialities it seems) apology to both the women who visit the site and again to the women members of the bristol indymedia collective.
your collective would never expect a black person to work alongside a blatant racist, why should you work alongside a blatant sexist?
if you feel that there are not enough of you women on bimc to do this, i am absolutely certain women from other imcs will join you to press this issue. it is important that we all fight against misogyny, wherever and whenever we encounter it. we must break the silence.
