Subject: [IMC-Process] list summaries & best practices - institutional
memory and keeping intra-network communication alive
hi folks,
below, i've included a list of summaries that i've just compiled
primarily from the imc-summaries list.
this practice of doing summaries for the various lists has been an
off and on again practice. folks on commwork and a few others are
very excited about seeing regular summaries happen for the key global
lists so that we can all get a better sense of what is happening in
different parts of the network. as we grow and grow, we need ways to
handle the information flow. this is one very powerful and tangible
way to do that. this is a practice that other networks use,
including debian. i'll try and get a techie to share something on
that with us.
you can see from the summaries i've included that we haven't been
consistent with this practice. this is probably nearly 90% complete
with a few other network-wide summaries evan did and a few more for
tech that kellan did and comm and process. but a handful. at the
most basic level, this inconsistency i would argue manifests itself
in how the "right hand" (ie any list or project or local imc)
sometimes has no idea what the "left hand" is doing. if you just
quickly browse through some of these, you will get a feel for the
immense amount of work and projects that are happening, as well as
the amount of communication and coordination it takes to keep a
network that is so broad, diverse and multilingual as this thriving
and healthy. institutional memory and documentation are key to our
healthy growth and understanding.
the commwork working group is working on this project (list summaries
and getting us all talking to each other) and you'll be hearing from
us soon. i also hope that this invigoration of this practice and the
current initiative will help us take steps toward creating a network
"best practices" as well as a list of projects for each imc. we'll
be developing a webpage for these so that local imcs can post their
best practices and it will be a quick place to see how many projects
are going on and what each local imc is doing (their favorite
projects/idea, proposals, policies, media making endeavors, whatever
they want to include as a best practice).
currently we have a best practices wiki. but it's just a beginning
and we'll be tweaking the design as we get more involved. i imagine
we'll have both a separate page for best practices and this wiki and
cross-reference them so it would be searchable by local imc and by
category. more as we develop this project. we'll have to be in
touch with each local imc and get the information they'd like to
share as a best practice.
