Hi folks,
I sent this call to a couple of global indymedia lists... There has been
talk here and there for some time on imc listserves about the need for
strategizing ... Doug

Dear all,

Let's share ideas about strategies on the imc-strategies list. It's time
for it... /

Compartiremos ideas sobre estrategias en la lista de las estrategias. Es
hora para el... :)

Summary:
------------

[en]
Shall we start a dialog on the imc-strategies list about principles,
strategies, and tactics shared between imc activists and locals and in the
network?

A way to start dialog, including a list of possible topics, is discussed
below. A first thing to do could be to develop an extended topic list. A
big challenge is languages. Perhaps a workable way to start is to
translate summaries of discussions. Any other suggestions?

To sign up on the imc-strategies list see:

Discussion is below.

traducir resumen discusion.

Discusion en ingles esta abajo. Appologies para la longitud.

Discussion:
--------------

Given the growth of the network and the tough times we are in, it seems
time to strategize. There are a number of indymedia participants really
interested in strategies. I hope we find time and space online to talk
together.

There is talk starting about strategies now around a possible large
international indymedia gathering.
Here is a list of topics from planning notes about this:
http://lists.cu.groogroo.com/mailman/archive/tmf/2002-December/000081.html

Topics mentioned in the above note, with a few added at end, are:
- Tech strategies
- Legal issues
- Funding strategies
- Internal communication systems and practices
- Translation strategies
- Strategic relationships
- Editorial philosophy and practices
- The IMC principles of unity and local membership criteria: revisions?
interpretations?
- Conflict resolution and arbitration

It could work well to approach some or many of these topics online.

To start strategy discussions online in a widespread participatory way,
shall we specify topics further on the imc-strategies list and pick
something(s) to start talking about?

On discussion process:
- Not sure if we need a list moderator or not. Perhaps this will be so if
the debates get very contentious. Hope not. Who has the time? :)

- It would help to keep short summaries at the top of longer notes.

- Perhaps it makes sense for strategic ideas to be discussed in multiple
languages, since the ideas in the notes will be complex and sometimes
long. Regular list and discussion summaries would be one way to move
across language gaps.

- Perhaps we can get some strategy documents onto wiki and edit those
together.

- We could try different modes of dialog/interaction.

Any other ways to go forward that might work better?
Suggestions?

My position on this is general: I am in support of us developing together
multiple strategies that can help us to create solidarity and effective
actions by people and locals with very diverse views.

Solidarity, Doug
