Hi all,

A reply with some helpful points of clarification has been received from Brian
at UC IMC about the open letter:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-chicago/2002-December/001050.html

We need to read over this and later follow ups closely and compose another
letter -- perhaps to the TMF proposal creators.

Here is a draft of note to imcs with statements on grants...

Comments?

Greetings to imc locals that have written statements on grants.

Summary
-----------

[en]
As you may know, a proposal for the Tactical Media Fund, TMF, which relates to
indymedia network funding has been written.

Funds for the TMF proposal would go to fund some major imc network projects: a
network strategy meeting, communication systems, and tech training.

The TMF proposal has been (or is being) submitted to the Open Society
Institute, OSI, of George Soros. Accepting an OSI grant would be similar to
accepting a Ford Foundation Grant. See links about this in the note below.

Chicago IMC has written an open letter to Urbana-Champaign IMC about the TMF
proposal to OSI. See:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-chicago/2002-December/001049.html

We have received an initial reply on this and there will probably be further
discussion in our list archives in 2002-December and 2003-January:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-chicago/

We invite you to read and discuss the above notes and the information linked
there.

Please feel free to discuss these issues on the imc-chicago listserv or
wherever:
imc-chicago@indymedia.org

Discussion of next steps (in english)
--------------------------------------------

We will be sending notes about these issues to imc-process and
imc-communication listserves, probably in the next few weeks.

In general, we believe it is time to engage in prolonged indymedia planning
discussions about imc local and network strategies, processes and funding.

We invite your locals and imc participants to discuss diverse approaches to imc
strategic development, process creation and to develop general criteria for
fund raising on these listserves:

imc-strategies (unmoderated):
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-strategies
imc-process (now moderated):
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-process

And on various other listserves:
imc-communication, imc-commwork, imc-finance, imc-editorial, etc.

The future of the indymedia network as a decentralized democracy rests on our
ability to start now in making strategies together about various areas of
*shared* decentralized network development (tech, editorial policy, fund
raising, legal issues, conflict resolution, etc.) and planning how to implement
various strategies.

Let's start doing so together!

In solidarity,
Chicago IMC
