Yes, PIMP in particular looks very cool (and being a full
implementation). I could definitely see how it would be useful for
giving live (-ish) coverage of a protest. I was impressed with SF
coverage of Oct 26, in part because it was so timely (though I imagine
just by way of cell phone and people on the other end transcribing and
updating the site -- nothing high tech is really necessary).
I do happen to know someone who has at least some knowledge of
phone/Linux stuff, and might be willing to help -- the PIMP stuff would
involve hooking a computer to the phone system (practically it might
have to be a dedicated number). Of course, it would also be very cool
if we could get it to be an answering machine that emails us
(potentially encrypted) messages so we don't have to check the analog
machine. But that would just be a side benefit.
Anyway, if we can get the computer to turn the phone call into an audio
file, it could definitely be uploaded to the newswire. I don't know how
good the end product would sound, though, coming from a phone and
potentially without editing. It could also be put in a holding area for
someone to edit.
Other people have suggested using cellular text messaging to post
articles. This would probably involve an email gateway to the newswire,
but we'd have to protect it since spamming would be so easy (like only
accept emails from known addresses). Technically, though, it's not too
difficult. You could also produce real material this way, since you can
edit text but not a phone call.
