Don, all,

It sounds excellent -- I emphatically approve our implementing this system.=
 Tell me how to get my hands dirty.... (Text from URL is below.) (When it=
 was first mentioned a few months ago on one of the global lists, I don't=
 think I even looked at the page -- I was a bit taken aback with the name=
, which I still think is of questionable taste, to say the least.)

PIMP - the Phone IndyMedia Patch system=20
"the voice of indymedia"=20
=20
  Despite the widespread acceptance of the internet as a news resource in t=
he developed world, there are many occasions where access to computers is=
 limited or non-existant. In such circumstances, a more `low-tech' soluti=
on is called for.=20

The PIMP allows anyone with access to a telephone to submit reports to indy=
media. It was originally developed to allow up-to-the-minute reports to b=
e made from actions such as Mayday and Woomera, where computers are in sh=
ort supply, or not easily accessible to the `people on the ground.' Repor=
ts are submitted to indymedia as audio files, and indymedia followers not=
 physically involved in the action are encouraged to transcribe these.=20

How to Use the PIMP

Pre-registration (optional)=20
If you wish to make reports with your personal details specified, you can p=
re-register for a log-in number here. This step can be skipped for anonym=
ous postings.=20

Dialling=20
The number to call to make a voice report is 03 9343 6697. This number curr=
ently services the Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane IndyMedia si=
tes.=20

Story Options=20
After dialing, you will be asked to enter an ID code, or 0 for anonymous po=
stings. A couple of options follow, including the IndyMedia server to sub=
mit to, the topic-group of the story, and the report type. Calls from old=
 (non-touch-tone) telephones are still OK, but can only report to the def=
ault server with the default options.=20

Recording=20
When leaving your report, remember to speak clearly and loudly.=20

Leaving another report=20
After you have finished recording, pressing '#' will allow you to make anot=
her report. You will be asked to re-enter the story options.=20

Ideas/Tips=20

It may be a good idea to write down your report on paper first, then read i=
t out over the phone.=20
This system can be used for interviews - just pass the phone between yourse=
lf and the interviewee (make sure they speak clearly). =20

Would a process like that noted below be of use to us?

I have worked on systems like this using the voxeo platform,
http://community.voxeo.com we have occassionally used phoned in reports
from the streets that were then uploaded by a tech. I have also coded a
system that automatically uploaded to a website using CXML. VoiceXML with
PHP can do the trick pretty easily.

I believe the melbourne IMC using something called the PIMP.

Hope that helps.
