hey gang,
How's it all going? Good as can be, I hope. Several things, seems
I fell of the listserve again and was wondering to be put back on.
Second, talked to a couple people out here in DeKalb land as well as
seeing a few comments on the site about local coverage on the newswire. I
talked to Chris G. last week and we started talking about focusing center
panel on local issues. Someone in a comment had brought up the idea of
splitting the column between local and other. I think this would be an
awesome idea that would really credit the site for local participation. I
counted the wire now and out of 25 postings only 5 are local. I don't know
what is involved in creating a second column, but I would offer that the
"other " column could be accessed by a front page button and give front page
space preference to the local site. As to deciding what is local and not,
my common sense sees it as very simple, but i admit it is a little harder to
transfer it into such concrete black and white terms. I'll spew out some of
the things I thought.
1. events/content pertinant to Chicago/Northern Illinois/ Northwest
Indiana etc.
2. spill over coverage of big events in Madison or Milwaukee may make
sense, it would definitely make sense if posted by Chicagoan.
3. posts by Chicagoan back from a trip to the West Bank or National
rally in DC makes total sense.
4. editorials should have local relevancies. A rant about the peace
movement as a whole shouldn't be in local, but if it was about Chicago's
movement, it should be.
5. If someone from Georgia has posted about coming down to SOA, that
is pertinant to Chicagoland community. In the same sense spillover from
Milwaukee or Madison makes sense. If someone from oakland posts about their
weekly vigil, that is not. I don't think very many people will fly to
oakland for a small vigil.
Of course this could easily be a big mess and a lot of editing will
need to be done, but maybe not if done correctly, smartly. I think though,
of high importance to the project would be the benefits. One of the most
frustrating things for me was to post a photo essay to have it pushed off
the wire four hours later by the likes of Bobby Israel or others with too
much time on their hands.
Take care y'all, see you . Mr. Garth
