I think I posted this email from Tom to the tech list, but not the
working list. We came to consensus about moving servers to St. Louis,
but we should reaffirm that or determine an alternative. I'm heading
off for Thanksgiving until Saturday, so I won't be able to follow up on
discussion much until then.
Here's the text from a couple messages on Tech:
Elizabeth:
[Opinions] Hmmmmm, there's a lot of flags in this message
that whisper to me--not St. Louis, at least not now.
That's what I hear/read in it... -- elizabeth
Ian:
Yeah, I know... but then there's problems like this at all the places.
My one positive feeling about St. Louis is that I got the feeling we can
get the permissions to do most stuff ourselves -- as long as the box is
physically working and connected I think we'll be fine. I don't think
we can get that access to most other available servers, and there's a
lot of similar issues for most available options.
I think we have the resources to do our own tech -- we have enough
people now, and I think if we tried we could find more should that
become necessary.
At least, assuming your concerns are regarding the communication
issues...?
Wherever we move I want to document the installation process and create
a plan for moving elsewhere -- that is important for a number of
reasons. I know there will be many annoyances moving from Stallman, but
I'm hoping we can learn from that so we're more mobile in the future.
Elizabeth:
Wherever we move.
I totally agree about creating portability and documentation.
My worry on St. Louis is less about communication -- more about
the st. louis relationship to its hosting and equipment. I'm
clipping below an e-mail sent to chicago-tech and other lists
last week from Jon Pike of the St. Louis collective planning to
come to Chicago from St. Louis in December... has anyone been
in contact with him??? -- Eliz
Chris K:
Well, we do have a standing offer from Urbana....
Chris

Hi, I have been having a rough time keeping up with my email lately with
lots of medical bills, reintigration into the workforce, depression and
general drama. All the local imc techs have way too much on their plates
but dann green is usually responsive and together when it comes to
answering email. dann@stlimc.org
I can answer your questions about our server:
The hardware was donated by me to the IMC.
The bandwith is donated with no strings attached to acumen consulting.
As far as having a stategy for being sued for libel etc, we think that our
policy of NOT editing user's comments under any circumstatnces offers some
protection but we have hashed this out at meeting and that particular
question is better addressed to the list.
