Let me chime in my concord with Don here.  

The feedback I get from others goes like this: when there's a
"really big event"--like Genoa, Quebec, D.C. ..., people will
go to the site even if they don't like the format, but without
a "big" event going on--they'll go to Common Dreams, Truth Out,
and some others.  It's not a scientific study, but it suggests
that while we likely keep folks reading the big stuff, the
local stuff suffers.  Just a thought...

Some more reable places? openflows.org may be boring colors, but 
very readable, nologo.org seems a little more catchy without
detracting from the material.  There are quite a few other
IMCs who have made color choices.   I like deep blues, but
have been grouched at (just by male people--seems blues hit
the most colorblindness nerves).

As for moi... When I have to read more than a paragraph--I always 
go to the print version.  I may scan the center column--but 
I never read it unless asked a question about it.  Some of 
the solo graphics stories are more dramatic with black backgrounds, 
but I from having to reset a number of groupings in the past,
I often suspect the dramatic background actually detracts from the 
news-value importance--the frame diminishing the info value.
I'd hazard a guess it may stop folks from sometimes analyzing a
less than "dramatic" photo assembly--even ones with considerable
newsworthiness.

Well that's two bits of my anti-monopoly money for what it's worth...
