I'm stuck at work today, so I can't get down there for it. Don suggested we=
order another Archos Jukebox Recorder, which I support. While we wouldn'=
t get it in time for this, I invite messages toward consensus on this poi=
nt, for a purchase in the near future.

For now, Mike may want to call in with a cell phone from the scene, with so=
meone using a phone line recorder (there's one in our desk drawer at the =
CIMC office) to record the audio that way.

Hello, all. I'm going to be in downtown Chicago this Friday, October 18th
to report on the demonstration put together by Chicago Media Watch. The
press release describing the event is appended below.

Aaron, I'm hoping to phone in a headline on this. Right now, I don't have
the equipment to record and edit acts, so if you want the report, it'll
just be a straight report. I haven't been able to listen regularly since
I moved from Champaign. I started living in the north suburbs of Chicago,
outside of a station listening area that carries FSRN, and I don't have
regular Internet access. Does Rob Manning still do headlines on Friday?
If so, I have his email and will get in touch with him about it.

IMC Chicago folks... hi. My name's Michael Feltes. I'm currently
studying at Shimer College in Waukegan. From last September to this
August, I lived downstate and worked with the U-C IMC doing mainly radio
work, but also with our newspaper. I've been getting settled in at school
and am now starting to work in journalism again. I'm planning on writing
a article for the Newswire with pics about this event, which will
hopefully be posted late Friday night. Are any of you planning on going?
I'd love to work with you on this.

Paul, I already talked with you about doing an "interview the reporter"
segment for Mediageek. I don't have a phone of my own; we have two
communal phone lines in our dorm. They're in a echoy stairwell with
people running up and down all the time, so talking to you on one of them
would sound like crap. I can borrow the offices of one of my teachers,
but I'd have to ask them ahead of time. The easiest thing to do, I think,
is to set a time during the business day sometime next week. I'll arrange
to use a phone and email you the number, and then we can talk.

Thanks so much, folks. Take care.

CHICAGO MEDIA WATCH CELEBRATES "MEDIA DEMOCRACY DAY", OCTOBER 18, WITH
"TRICK OR TREAT" TOUR OF LOCAL MEDIA OUTLETS

Tour Aims To Build Opposition to FCC's Killing of Media Ownership Limits

Chicago, October 4 -- The Chicago Media Watch Political Action Committee
(CMW PAC) announces a walking tour of downtown Chicago media sites,
scheduled for Friday, October 18, International Media Democracy Day. The
event will begin with a press conference at 9:30 AM at Columbia College,
33 E. Congress, Rm. C-33 (First Floor). The tour will commence at 10:00 AM
with a walk from 33 E. Congress to the ABC TV and radio studios at 190 N.
State St.

The theme of the event is "Big Media Gets Treats; Public Tricked!" The
objectives are:

Raise awareness of concentrated media ownership and its harmful effects

Protest the Federal Communication Commission's proposed removal of the
remaining ownership restrictions on media companies

Encourage the public to contact their elected officials and the FCC with
comments about the local effects of media concentration, during the FCC's
public comment period on the proposed changes, which ends Jan. 2, 2003.

Participants will be dressed in Halloween costumes and give away candy and
informative flyers.

On October 1, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released 12
studies examining the current state of the media marketplace, including
how consumers use the media, how advertisers view the different media
outlets, and how media ownership affects diversity, localism and
competition. The FCC is seeking comment on these studies as part of a
review of Broadcast Ownership Rules, which was launched on September 12,
2002. The 90-day comment period runs from Oct. 2 to Jan, 2, 2003. See the
studies at www.fcc.gov.

Last week, FCC Chairman Michael Powell said that "no merger proposal would
be deemed unthinkable" by his agency. The largest media companies have
been vigorously attacking the few remaining regulations in the courts of
late, and have won important victories both there and at the FCC.
