We had our meeting today, and everyone agrees on the move. I'm very
excited about setting up a new system.
Everyone is very concerned about legal issues considering recent events
and trends. I'm not sure if you had any contingency plans in case of a
legal action against St. Louis, yourselves, or anyone else involved in
managing the server. We feel it's important to consider these
possibilities ahead of time, and if you don't have a plan we can help
put a plan together. This might simply be a matter of investigating
Global's legal infrastructure, and making sure we are all aware of the
resources available to us in response to a legal attack.
I also forgot to ask exactly what the funding situation is. I believe
you mentioned that the server/bandwidth is donated. I assume this means
that bandwidth and co-location space is being donated on an ongoing
basis, and hardware is the property of St. Louis IMC...? Who is
donating the ongoing costs, and is there any conditions on that
donation? I don't want to look a gift-horse in the mouth, but of course
an IMC's autonomy is central to its mission.
It will probably take a while to set up a testing environment and
confirm that everything is in working order... of course, as events heat
up it's of ever increasing importance that we are a consistent and
stable site for viewers and posters, so I don't know how long until we'd
be able to go live in the new environment.
We'd also love to meet you guys sometimes. The idea of a Midwest
conference/convergence/get-together has come up several times during
meetings, and we'd really like to set something up. And of course if
anyone from St. Louis IMC is in Chicago, they should be sure to look us
up.
Thanks for your help, and I look forward to working with you.
In solidarity,
Ian
