Derek,
It is difficult to answer your question because it is rather general.
Any immediate response that come to mind feels like useless
rhetoric/ranting/diatribe.
Web based independent news sources are great. Indymedia's been great
too, it's made a lot possible. I think there are other cultural shifts to
be made. The fact that lots of people like the major brand security, so
most people watch Fox News at nine just as they purchase other brands that
they are familiar with.
Of course Independent News is important. Will it save the planet?
Personally I don't look to technology to save the planet. I feel I use it
in order to do some sort of good work while living in this belly of the
beast. I think that there are other important cultural shifts to work on.
Such as Cooperation over Competition. Or talking to strangers on the
street. Planting a garden.
I ask myself these questions. Was peace impossible before the advent of
the personal computer? Do we need to wait until micro computers are planted
in our brains complete with instantaneous wireless messaging? The Gutenberg
press didn't seem to do much to end wars. In the Greek Comedy of
Lysistrata, the women of the opposing sides seemed to be able to come
together in a way to end the war. That occurred before the press.
To go a step furthur, we can look at certain indigenous cultures. They
seem to hold to the saying that you don't need a weatherman to tell you
which way the wind blows. What about cultures that don't utilize material
technology to any great extent? Perhaps information too big for our heads
isn't necessary anyway? But then, we're the ones suffering from
Alzheimers.. I don't mean to overidealize indigenous cultures, and I do
mean to add the sound of discussion to my voice.
Still, we need our civilization we need our independent press for the
same reasons as 100, 300 years ago. More for the message than the
messenger.
These are my thoughts, hope they're useful.

My opinion in a nutshell is that yeah, it's great, a lot of good work
has been made possible by independent news. At the same time most people
still watch the the 9:00 Fox News.
