Okay, so I've meant to deal with this, but we really should upgrade to
dadaIMC, since I know that'll make everyone happier. Installing it on
Stallman is now nearly trivial. But getting the old material converted
isn't as trivial. I'm tempted to punt. We can just leave all the old
code in place, and the old database and whatnot, and just put it in
archive mode more or less (no new posts, no comments, no new features).
All activity would go on in the new site.
The good part: easy to do, should be reliable. The bad part: most of
the old content will be somewhat hidden -- it won't show up in our new
newswire (including the new newswire's archives), on our new search, or
in our new feature archive. We can include links here and there, but
for the most part it will be like starting fresh. The good part: Google
and other indexers still allow people to find old content, and no links
will be borken. Bad part: they aren't thorough. Good part: no data is
going away, we can always try the migration of old content later if we
really want to (it's not necessary to do the migration right away).
Oh, now the good parts:
* Separate newswires (local/elsewhere)
* Specific form for posting links to other sites, instead of people
always just doing copy-and-paste.
* Integration with radicalendar
* Authors get to edit their own articles after posting
* Individual user accounts
* Almost all administration done through the web
* More customizability of the look
If we don't do a migration, I can have a working site up by Sunday.
Well, I have a working site up now, but I could actually apply our site
look, put in the proper links, etc.
