Garth, Here's an announcement that's been on a bunch of lists--this is
pretty much a yearly regular.--Eliz
Friends,
On this Wednesday evening August 6 starting at 7:00 pm, there will be a
Hiroshima Day ceremony that is going to take place in Chicago in Hyde
Park at the Henry Moore statue "Nuclear Energy", located on Ellis Avenue
between 56th Street and 57th Street on the campus of the University of
Chicago.
We will have speakers, music, singing, poetry, and readings.
Confirmed speakers include:
Dr. Quentin Young (former medical director of Cook County Hospital and
nationally-known proponent of single-payer medical insurance)
Alexander DeVolpi (nuclear reactor physicist and arms control expert
retired from Argonne National Laboratory)
Bernice Bild (well-known peace and community activist, in Nuclear Freeze
Campaign and Committee for New Priorities and advocacy on housing
issues)
Mel Rothenberg (emeritus professor of mathematics, University of
Chicago, active in Chicagoans Against War and Inequality)
Gerald Marsh (physicist and arms control expert, retired from Argonne
National Laboratory)
In addition, we expect that we may have further speakers, including a
student from the University of Chicago, a representative of the
Japanese-American community, and a speaker from the 8th Day Center for
Peace and Justice.
Bradford Lyttle will be Master of Ceremonies for this event. (Brad is
an internationally known peace activist, former presidential candidate
and Quaker pacifist.)
Music will be performed by Lisa Rademacher on a keyboard. We may have
additional vocalists who will also lead us in singing. A poetry reading
will be presented by Dr. Al Klinger of the Hyde Park Committee Against
War and Racism.
Media will be present, including representatives of the Chicago Tribune
and of CAN-TV who will videotape the event for subsequent broadcast in
the Chicago metropolitan area.
Everyone is invited - we hope to see you there.

hey all,
what do you think of a coming Hiroshima/Nagasaki commemoration Center
Feature?
Peoria, Rockford, DeKalb are having events. Any in Chicago? Also Peace
Museum still has photo show up of Hiroshima aftermath. I could dig up a
few
more links as well.
thoughts? g.
