hey garth,

actually,  i am leaving chicago to move to nyc on 8/31.  i have taken a
position with White Columns, an alternative artists space in manhattan.  i
will continue to volunteer with WIDC, but from a distance (of over 800
miles).  i wanted to initiate this conversation with CIM, but you should
know that you will be working with one of widc's board members.  they are
eager to make sure that widc is accessible and functional as a vital
community space.  we probably won't have staff until October, and only if
our funding base improves.

i was the person who approached jim owen and chris geovanis.  the "package"
depends on what you need.  For example, a standing monthly date will be $150
and a space for your materials, notice on our calendar, etc.  A shared desk,
access to our dsl line, shared mailbox plus the above would cost about $250.
If you want to add meetings dates, it depends on how many meetings per
month, but let's say add $25 for each meeting.  If the Video Committee wants
to install editing equipment in our workshop room, and use it for editing,
emergency response, workshops, etc. (PLUS all of the above)  then we need to
figure out the costs together.  Probably more like $600/mo.  does this help?

other groups who are interested in sharing the space:
Chicago Palestine Film Festival (tapes in Archive, mailbox, meeting space
and spring festival),
Asian American Artists Collective (standing date, mailbox and 3 meeting
dates) and
Pintig Cultural Group (desk, phone, dsl, mailbox, meeting space and bank
days for fall theater production).

an initial would be great.  although we were thinking of a simple agreement
that allows either party to cancel with 30 days notice.  Or maybe 60 days,
to allow for better planning.  you would only need to hire a sound person if
the event was complicated.  perhaps you could designate a CIM member to be
trained (although the set up is pretty simple) and responsible for
supervising sound?

i am so glad that CIM is interested.  take care-

rebecca

Rebecca,

thanks for your response, we are having a meeting this sunday to discuss the
screenings and one or two of us will have to
discuss it in furthur details, perhaps when you return.  a few weeks back
someone, i'm not sure who, approached Chris
geovanis on our renting office/desk space.  we do have interest in this as
it is closer to where most of us live compared to
our current office space (which we hardly use).  the way i understood it, it
was basically deskspace with a dsl connection.  If
you are interested in doing something in that direction we could discuss
that as well.

We are looking at doing a screening once a month, probabaly 7-10 or 11pm.
Thursday's also seem like a good time.  How
much rent would you want from us?  We would like to do the screenings as an
ongoing thing but would you like an initial
up-front 6-12 months commitment from us?  Will we also need to obtain/pay a
sound person?  I know that we will need to
meet in person to discuss the many fine details, but the more info I can
bring to this sunday's meeting the better.

Thanks,
Garth Liebhaber

hello Garth,

Yes, I am very, very  interested.  I spoke to several people from CIM about
that possibility.

I feel that WIDC's Community Center has a lot of potential as a resource for
the community.  But that it has been underutilized.  We have approached
several progressive groups about sharing our space and/or bolstering
relationships already in place.  These groups include:

Asian American Collective (a panasian collective of many standing projects,
including Mango Tribe, YAWP, CHOP, the Asian American Film Showcase, etc.)

Pintig Cultural Group (a phillipino performance group that presents original
theatrical plays & musicals about community issues)

and CIM.

I have been proposing Thursdays as the best day for standing dates.  That
leaves Sund-Wedn free for rehearsal space rentals.  And it leaves Friday and
Saturday (our prime nights), available for rentals and longer theatrical
productions.

Would you or a committee from CIM want to meet with me and discuss the
details?  FYI, I will be leaving Chicago at the end of the month.  If the
timing is still off for CIM, you can certainly continue this discussion with
Jennifer Reeder from the WIDC Board of Directors.  We will have no or
limited staff for a while, since we lost 40% of our funding last year.  But
WIDC was volunteer-run for the first nine years of its existence, and we see
restructuring as an opportunity to get back to basics, and relevancy.

Rebecca Gee
