Tom, et al.:
The info on the Herzog film Hasta Cuando will show is below. As for
the title of the festival, I'm ok with any of the suggested
alternatives. SpinFree kept on conjuring up visions of laundry
detergent which wasn't exactly what I had in mind. Let's finalize the
title by this Friday so that Miguel can begin making the flyer/poster
art. So far the suggestions are:
1. News from the Underground
2. Counter Culture
3. Mainstream Underground
plus the subtitle, "A festival of autonymous media", which I think
we all agreed sounds good.
I personally vote for the first one.
The idea of tabling should be fine at Decima Musa, but I need to
double check with the owners. The press release looks good. Don't
include any band name for the intermission for the Saturday event,
just list it as "Intermission with music" lasting for 45 - 60 minutes.
LESSONS OF DARKNESS
(Lektionen in Finsternis)
Directed by Werner Herzog
Germany 1992, 35mm, color, 52 min.
German with English subtitles
Shortly after the Gulf War, filmmaker Werner Herzog teamed up with
cameraman and coproducer Paul Berriff to document the postwar
devastation inside Kuwait. The result is a Dantean view of apocalyptic
spectacle: lakes and deltas of thick black oil; burning wells sending
towers of flame skyward and superheating everything around them. The
film is organized into thirteen "chapters," narrated by Herzog in an
appropriately hushed and awestruck voice and set to music by Mahler,
Wagner, and Verdi. Lessons of Darkness was chosen as the best film of
1995 by J. Hoberman of The Village Voice, who proclaimed that the film
"could have been made to illustrate the Book of Revelations."
