[CIMC-working] What audio editing software....

Hello all,
    As I work on my pictures here our friend Amanda who went with us to nyc 
recorded lots of good stuff from the trip.  She used her mini-tape player- 
can anyone recomend a good simple to use yet not mickey mouse editing 
program?  would such a program allow her to plug the speaker part of the 
player into the mic of the computer in order to digitize?
    Also, I will bring the dat recorder to sunday's meeting, we couldn't 
figure it out.  Confagated technology! : )
