Subject: [IMC-Process] re: summaries

Hi all,

Thanks very much to Ana for the summary listing of notes in the last three
months.

So, on process about process...

I have two points of difference with Ana's summary.

I think her interpretation of the lack of success of the facilitation
experiment -- that it didn't work as intended -- is a bit over
generalizing. The new work list didn't work. However...

The simple facilitation method for the imc-process list, *when in place*,
has actually generally worked as intended.

Yes, there was a process breakdown for a day or so -- and big difference of
opinion between John and I. But, I think we have worked past that or are
working past that now.

The facilitation criteria were very simple to start:
    to block spam
to send abusive posts back for rewrite

[We need more helpful criteria to enable better facilitation.]

Both criteria above were implemented more or less successfully *when in
place*, perhaps with a *debatable* exception of letting through one
critical note by Andy. However....

Four attacking posts by Andy were sent back for rewrite in the last month
(3 notes in last 2 weeks or so).
This probably helped the list avoid a protracted flame war (as occurred in
May/June and August).

Around 40 spam have been deleted in the last month.

Yes, there was a list breakdown but there are hickups or breakdowns in many
group processes, including face to face ones and ones in the spokes
model. It's not time to give up.

John, Ana and I are working together now in developing ideas for how the
facilitation criteria and process can be improved. Help from others is
needed in that.

There are a number of proposals on the process list and
imc-process-facilitate list about the direction of the list and how to
improve facilitation.

It may take a month or half a year or longer to achieve:
    more clear facilitation criteria
an agenda of topics for discussions
development of effective discussion strings to develop various process
proposal options

It takes longer to do things on lists and in a volunteer network. But we
can probably do these things if we keep trying.

The last two months on the imc-process list per se were a very simple
beginning.
We can build on this.

I don't think we should write off *yet* making efforts using the process
list for grassroots planning and policy work by volunteers in the imc
network.

Best, Doug
