Ian, Big ouch. I was hoping last night when I couldn't log on to
stallman that this wasn't going to be as long-term as it now looks.
Ian, didn't you set up a a test site off-the main Indy site? If that's
still available, would there be any sense to temporarily using it for a
newswire? How hard would it be to transfer newswire entries from the
one to the other once the the Indy-Seattle base, whether stallman or
some new creature is up again?

Just thinking aloud. -- Elizabeth

i went to speakeasy to respond to this.
stallman was locked up, no keyboard response.

i power cycled it. things looked normal, and got past the grub menu,
and after much normal looking stuff, imessages indicated that sdb was
being spun up.
but that kept going, and after a bit, there were a few more messages
before a kernel panic. unable to mount root fs on device.

noticed that it was whining pretty bad, so i thought a disk went bad.
pulled off top , but was not able to localize the source of the whine.
rebooted, and went into the various scsi bios/setups. the last one was
the most informative. scsi raid setup. i was able to get rid of the
whine, by selecting the option to Turn Off
Alarm.
in the raid config screen, the panel said that raid was degraded.

at this point, i have no more ideas as to how to proceed best. i am
wondering if dns ought to be pointed elsewhere, or it a temp box
should be put up to take the IP. or inglis?

this is going to be a big downtime.
