Dear Rebecca,
Thank you for your interest in Chicago Media Action. To get a flavor of
the kinds of things that we do, I recommend that you visit our website
and look at the links therein:
http://www.chicagomediaaction.org/
On the matter of protests or civil disobedience against media outlets, I'm
afraid that CMA has yet to officially arrive at a position on the
matter. It's not something that we do currently, and it isn't something
that we have officially endorsed or supported (though we might endorse it,
support it, or even do it).
Our work since our founding in November has been mostly on the educational
and organizing front: writing letters, working with media outlets and
agencies (we're involved with organizing meetings with the FCC and with
Chicago's PBS station WTTW), analyzing the media (we're getting one study
of coverage ramped up), and making our own media (we appear regularly on
CAN-TV's Community Forum, for example). Our work could expand into the
spheres of more direct action, though how quickly that might occur is
unclear for the moment.
I myself will keep your interests in mind to see if I can find out about
other groups or others interested in direct action on the media, and
I will certainly pass along any leads I may find. In the meantime, you
may want to post a bulletin on the Chicago IMC's newswire to see if anyone
reading that site is similarly interested.
In any event, if you are interested in learning more about Chicago Media
Action, you are welcome to join us at our biweekly meetings. I can pass
along details about our meetings to you if you wish.
Sincerely,
----------
