Hello there!
We're the Prince Myshkins (Rick and Andy), a San Diego-based satirical
songwriting duo.
We perform original political music (on guitar and accordion) about war,
sexuality, traffic,
genetically modified food, medicine, the repression of minors, and many
other topics.
Most (though not all) of the songs are funny, with rapid-fire delivery of
verbose lyrics.
More information on us below.
We're planning our second extensive Midwest tour for this fall (we live in
San Diego),
and we're trying to put together a concert with Charlie King and Karen
Brandow, who'll
be in the area around then. We're contacting Chicago groups working for
peace, justice,
and human and civil rights to ask if they're interested in setting up a
peace concert, a
benefit, or any appropriate event (we also do classes and workshops). Our
target date for
this is September the 19th.
Charlie King (who Pete Seeger calls "one of the greatest singers and
songwriters
of our time") has been at it since the very early '70's, singing for peace
and justice
with good humor during intense involvement with the anti-nuclear movement,
the
movement to close the School of the Americas, the Campaign to End the Death
Penalty
(and the Journey of Hope from Violence to Healing), and countless other
causes. His
marvelous songs slide from the hilarious to the heartbreaking to the
inspirational, often
within a single verse and chorus. I think the Chicago Peace Museum has a
collection of
his T-shirts. His partner, Karen Brandow, is a wonderful singer with
extensive knowledge
of the Latin American "Nueva Cancion" movement of songwriters. For more on
them,
see http://www.charlieking.org.
The Prince Myshkins have been at it since 1997, after our move to California
from Urbana,
Illinois. We've been deeply involved with San Diego activist organizations,
and have toured the
country performing for queer anarchists, Catholic nuns, upper-middle-class
suburbanites,
psychologists, kids, and anyone else who's wanted to listen. Recent songs
include "A War
Without an End," which casts George Bush as an annoying telephone solicitor,
"Hollywood,"
inspired by the Administration's post-9/11 proposals to movie producers for
terrorist-themed
film plots, "Banana Cream Pie," about the actual pie-in-the-face given to
the president of the
World Bank, and many more. Our website is
http://www.hiddenagendamusic.com/myshkins.
We've played Chicago fairly extensively, and have a good following there. In
the past, we've
performed at the Uncommon Ground, at the Queer is Folk Festival (at the Old
Town School),
at the Autonomous Zone, at the Green Mill, and in theaters and apartments
around the city.
We have two short appearances scheduled in Chicago during the week leading
up to the 19th,
which would allow for substantial promotion of anything larger we might be
able to put together.
If you lovely folks at the IMC have any ideas for us, or can forward this to
anyone you think
might be interested in putting together a double-duo political music event,
we'd be delighted.
Let us know what you think of all this!
in solidarity,
Andy Gricevich (of the Prince Myshkins)
