[CIMC-work] not for profit?

This is an important point, so I just want to make sure people are clear on
it. Our lack of a 'board of directors' has nothing to do with our tax-exempt,
not-for-profit status. Our fiscal agent, 8th Day, assumes technical fiscal
responsibility in terms of our use of funds, et al, under these parameters, and we
function under the auspices of 8th day as an autonomous, sanctioned
not-for-profit project.
Re the 'board of directors' issue, Crossroads has informally approached us
about our soliciting grant funds from them -- but -- their grantsmaking process
requires us to submit grants that outline our 'board of directors', a
heirarchical structure we have chosen not to adopt, in keeping with Indymedia
principles. I feel fairly confident that we could struggle with Crossroads on this
issue, and they would consider funding us (given that they've funded many other
projects that function with 501(c)3 fiscal agents, as well).
There are also other issues of importance to Crossroads in their grantmaking
process; they generally want to see diversity in gender, sexual orientation
and race in their grantees. We'd also have to tackle this issue with them, since
we don't have direct collective members that self-identify in meetings as
queer, and we have no Black or Latino collective members that attend meetings,
although we work closely with queer, Black and Latino projects.
