about refusing Nobels. I had an extremely literate friend who was in grad school. he ended up
dropping out over something to do with losing a grading book. One day in his tunnel-vision walk to
teach his class, he got hit by a car, flew over it and landed in the street. All cars stopped, the guy
behind him got out, said he saw it all and would be a witness in my friends favor. My friend got up,
mostly unhurt, yelled at him that it was his fault, not the cars and went off to class.
in a revealing moment, a hippie who was also listening to this story said something along the lines of
"oh dude! you totally should have gone for the money!" but it occurred to me that this was a much
better story. Indeed, the hippie would have smoked up his resulting windfall of weed and there would
be no story except: "one time i got hit by a car and got a bunch of money"
I would actually surmise that Kathy's philosophy being very Catholic Worker oriented would compel
her to turn down money that was made through the invention of dynamite (a WMD). Many Catholic
Worker types also take issue with money made through interest- that it comes from the labor of
others, usually poor people.
wished I could turn up some interesting articles related to our discussion, I think it would make a nice
feature. If I had the time perhaps I would ask Kathy these questions.
