Chicago Students Protest Coca-Cola’s Crimes in Colombia by Participating in a
“Boycott Coke” Day of Action

This Thursday, October 16th. Students from campuses across Chicago will march on
their campuses against Coca-Cola. Students at Loyola, UIC, DePaul, Northeastern,
and the University of Chicago will participate in actions on their campuses.
Students hope to begin to pressure their university administrations to cut
contracts with Coca-Cola.

Students are boycotting Coca-Cola to protest Coke’s brutal treatment of trade
unionists in Colombia. Eight Trade Unionists working in Coca-Cola plants and
organizing Coca-Cola bottling plant workers have been murdered by Colombian
paramilitaries since 1989. The workers who have been threatened and murdered are
all a part of SINALTRAINAL, the union in the Coke bottling plants in Colombia.
There are undisputed reports that Coca-Cola bottling managers in Colombia, South
America have allowed and encouraged paramilitary death squads to murder,
torture, and kidnap SINALTRAINAL activists in effort to crush their union. The
Coca-Cola corporation has remained continuously denied any connections with
paramilitary groups in Colombia.

“Coke should not be allowed to get away with murder in Colombia. We as students
have unique power in this campaign because we are who so much of Coke’s
advertising and marketing is directed towards and contracts with campuses bring
in millions of dollars in revenue to Coke each year.” says 3rd year University
of Chicago student, Nicole Aro.

Students from around the city were energized last spring when Lake Forest
College students kicked Coke off of their campus. Right now students are
focussing their energy on DePaul University. A victory at DePaul would help
build momentum for victories on other campuses throughout Chicago. Students from
around the city will join DePaul students for a rally on the Coke Day of Action.
