Dear collective,
I propose that we upgrade the Apple G4 in our offices so that it is video
capable. This would require the purchase of RAM, which I believe will
cost about $100 at Microcenter.
The advantage of doing this is working towards a goal of having a
collective media center available for the collective and public in terms
of media production, skillshares and workshops.
For video it would streamline our production process AND allow for more
collective participation in the process. We will be able to assemble the
television show in that computer and everyone will have *equal* access to
the means of production and distribution. This is closest to our model of
open source publishing and distribution and media empowerment. People
that want a copy of our television show can come to our office and make a
copy for themselves if they desire. People without access to equipment
will now have access.
This also has the benefit that we can have regularly scheduled skillshares
around all aspects of television production in a public place.
Logistics: I will front the purchase of the RAM. I'd like to put in a
request for reimbursement from the collective for some time in the future
as I know that our current accounts could not support this. Maybe funds
from a future screening. Or else if collective members wanted to
contribute directly to this purchase.
Also, I will ask Karl if we can install premiere on the Sony VAIO in that
office as I know that VAIO are designed to be ready for digital video
editing. This way we will have cross platform compatability and can serve
as a back-up if the G4 turns out to not function according to plan.
