Planning Meeting
5-8-04 'Summer of Resistance' Consulta
THIS THURSDAY, April 28, 6:30PM - 8:30PM
Agape House, 1046 W. Polk St., Chicago
The March 20 Anti-War Organizing Coalition invites all Chicago area anti-war
and peace organizations to participate in an important planning meeting for
the May 8 "Summer of Resistance" Consulta (see below for more details about the
Consulta's origins and goals). This Consulta planning meeting will be held on
Thursday evening, April 28 from 6:30PM - 8:30PM at Agape House, located at
1046 W. Polk. At this planning meeting we'll seek to recruit Consulta
facilitators, discuss security at the Consulta and develop the Consulta agenda. This
meeting is designed to give participants the opportunity to plan how the Consulta
will be structured, and NOT to decide or shape outcomes - that's what the
Consulta is for.
The proposal for the May 8 Consulta to plan a Chicago 'Summer of Resistance'
grew out of the follow-up meeting for the March 20 Chicago anti-war protest
convened at Michigan and Pearson by dozens of area peace and justice groups. The
goal of this Consulta? To build our movement democratically and strengthen
collaborative anti-war efforts through the summer and into the fall. Our
strategy? To take a 'connect the dots' approach to the issues by drawing the
parallels between cuts in funding for healthcare, education and other vital needs at
home and the growing costs of occupation and empire abroad. Whatever the
outcome of the elections this November, we need to continue to build a militant,
diverse and dynamic movement for peace with justice here and abroad. Join us.
NOTE: Some may have heard about a planning meeting this past Saturday for the
Consulta. At that meeting, participants decided that the invitation had not
been circulated widely enough, that many people who might want to attend were
also participating in actions in Peoria and Washington, and that the attendees
should cancel Saturday's meeting and reschedule to facilitate broader outreach
and participation. This Thursday's meeting is designed to answer those
concerns. Help us make our "Summer of Resistance" historic. Join us this coming
Thursday evening.
For people who may not be familiar with 'consultas': A consulta is a
transparent, democratic and decentralized method of learning about and coordinating
resistance activities. Generally, the Consulta includes: an open political
discussion, an action proposal session, calendar development, break-out sessions
(specific proposals, skill shares, tactics, information) and 1:1 voting. The
topics of discussion in the Consulta may include strategy, a wide range of
tactics, targeting, the formation of varying groups and affinities, and many other
themes. For these reasons, many Consultas are held in a security conscious
environment where efforts are made by organizers to minimize the likelihood of
opposition infiltration.

The text of the Chicago Summer of Resistance Consulta follows:
Summer of Resistance
Consulta
On March 20 -- the one-year anniversary of the beginning of war and
occupation in Iraq -- thousands of us gathered in Chicago to oppose war abroad and
attacks on our freedoms at home. Groups across the city are following up with
projects to oppose the war: organizing for the upcoming Democratic and Republican
National Conventions, the G-8 protests in Georgia this June, campus and
neighborhood organizing -- and sharpening the street heat it will take to defeat the
U.S. government’s agenda of domination and destruction.
Join people from across Chicago on Saturday, May 8 at the Summer of
Resistance Consulta. Our goal? To build our movement democratically and strengthen
collaborative efforts through the summer and into the fall. Our strategy? To take
a ‘connect the dots’ approach to the issues by drawing the parallels between
cuts in funding for healthcare, education and other vital needs at home and
the growing costs of occupation and empire abroad. Whatever the outcome of the
elections this November, we need to build a militant, diverse and dynamic
movement for peace with justice here and abroad. Join us.
