Dear all,

the global Indymedia site is finally going multilingual.

in December 2003, a lot of Indymedia sites had to be moved to new servers 
and the global features working group and the global tech group used the 
opportunity to set up the global Indymedia site with Mir as new software. 
(A big thanks to everybody involved in that.)

It is now possible to (1) translate features and (2) to display the whole 
site in different languages.

To add a translation every user can just click on "add translation" and 
submit the text in any language. Links to all translations appear either 
above or under the feature. The rate by which translations are submitted go 
beyond our boldest hopes: usually the first translations appear within 2 or 
3 hours and reach the main languages english, spanish and french to 
swedish, slovenian and urdu once in a while.

Secondly, the actual site itself (links, forms, static texts) can be 
displayed in a number of languages, simply by clicking in the links in the 
left column. If a language is specified all features will be displayed in 
that language. If no translation is available then the feature appears in 
the original language.

To make this even easier: The site is set up so that it recognizes the 
language settings of your browser, so spanish speaking users will directly 
get the global Indymedia site in Spanish now. If no language settings are 
detected, it will be displayed in English.

We are still busy sorting out bits and pieces, adding more languages, 
re-organizing our own work on the www-features list, but we hope that you 
are all as excited about this steps towards a multilingual site as we are.

We are also preparing for some layout changes and for some more active 
participation in feature-writing of under-representated regions, but we 
come back to that later in two seperate mails. (So please don't send us any 
designs right now...)

Right now we have two questions:

1) give us feedback on the concept and functionality at 
www-features(a)indymedia.org or report bugs to www-migration(a)indymedia.org

2) translate the following lists of words, if you want to add another 
language (link to the page with the bundles...)

La página global de Indymedia finalmente es multilingüe.

En diciembre de 2003, fue el proceso de mover los sitios a nuevos 
servidores. El grupo de trabajo de destaques y el grupo técnico 
aprovecharon la oportunidad para actualizar el programa del sistema, del 
viejo 'active' al Mir. (Muchas gracias a todos y todas las involucradas que 
lo hicieron posible)

Ahora es posible la traducción de destaques y visualizar la página en 
diferentes idiomas.

Para hacer una traducción, cualquier usuari@ de la página puede cliquear en 
"aporta una traducción" y publicar el texto en su lengua. Enlaces a todas 
las traducciones aparecen bajo el destaque. La frecuencia y tiempo de 
traducción es más un deseo que una realidad: normalmente la primer 
traducción aparece en 2 o 3 horas y los idiomas principales son inglés, 
español y francés. A veces tenemos hasta sueco, esloveno, urdu, árabe, 
entre otros.

Además, el sitio propio (enlaces, formularios, textos estáticos) pueden ser 
mostradados en diferentes idiomas simplemente cliqueando en los enlaces de 
idioma de la columna izquierda. Cuando hay una traducción de un destaque en 
tu idioma el sistema va a mostrar el texto en ese idioma, cuando una 
traducción no está disponible la mostrará en el lengua original.

Para ser más fácil: El sitio esta configurando para reconocer el 
configuración de su navegador. Entonces, los usuarios y usuarias de español 
va a tener directamente la página global de Indymedia en español. Cuando no 
hay una configuración en su navegador, o con un idioma que todavía no 
tenemos soporte, la página se mostrará en inglés.

Estamos ocupados con los detalles, sumando más idiomas, re-organizando 
nuestro trabajo en la lista www-features, pero esperamos a ustedes esten 
tan excitados sobre estos cambios como nosotros.

También estamos preparando cambios en la estructura y diseño de la página 
global, cambiar nuestra estructura de organización para tener más 
participación de personas que representen todas las regiones, pero vamos a 
hablar más sobre esto en otros correos. (Por favor no envíen diseños ahora...)

Ahora tenemos dos cuestiones:

1) Envíanos tus sugerencias sobre el concepto y las funciones a 
www-features(a)indymedia.org o señala fallos y errores de funcionamiento a 
www-migration(a)indymedia.org

2) Traduce las siguientes palabras de la página global y ayúdanos con la 
proceso de tener la página global en más idiomas. Tenemos español.
