I would consense on: we won't hide the image (adding that it belongs to 
an article about the Israeli/Palestinian issue, and wasn't necessarily 
submitted as a stand-alone item) but we are considering the role of the 
rotating media gallery, and the issue of out-of-context images.  (But we 
haven't made any decisions on that)

BTW, I sent an email to Dan earlier, telling him we were talking about 
this, so he wouldn't think we were ignoring him.

Don had some thoughts of giving more context to images in the rotating 
front-page spot -- e.g., linking them to their article, including a more 
prominent article title, or somesuch.  I think that would be pretty 
doable without any major modifications to the code (though I'd have to 
ask about specifics).  In this specific case, we could also have hidden 
the image without hiding it in the article (since the article 
specifically references the image), or we could have changed the date on 
the image so it got pushed back and was too old to be in the rotation, 
and again it would have still appeared in the article.
