Help! Our comrades in Mexico are being tortured and unfairly imprisoned
on US$5,000 bail for demonstrating against neoliberal policies of
exploitation, oppression and neo-slavery at the recent EU-Latin American
Summit in Guadalajara. Please fax/email the Mexican consulate TODAY in
solidarity with supporters around the world to demand that they be
released and that the torture STOPS. (see La Jornada, 6/3/04, for a
blow-by-blow account of the savage techniques being used to punish these
dedicated activists.)
FRIDAY JUNE 4 GLOBAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH PRISONERS OF GUADALAJARA. TO
THE MEXICAN CONSULATES!
Companer at s of Chicago,
Our Mexican comrades who were protesting in
Guadalajara against the E.U.-Latin America summit have been taken prisoner
(almost 100 arrests) and brutally tortured. The abuses go from
extreme physical violence to sexual harassment and psychological
intimidation. Numerous organizations (listed below) have joined together in
solidarity with the prisoners and have asked for a global day of solidarity
on Friday June 4th 2004. They requested that groups approach the
consulates in various cities with the listed demands.
In Chicago, a delegation will go to the Mexican consulate at 204 South
Ashland at 12:30pm to present the following letter to the consul with the
request that it be forwarded to the Governor of Jalisco and Presidente
Fox. As the action is in short notice, it has been decided that a
phone/fax/email run is the best way for people to support this action. We
are asking that starting at 8am on Friday June 4th people begin to place
calls as well as sending emails and faxes of the following letter to the
Mexican Consulate. The phone number was disconnected yesterday so you may
run into the same problem, however, we ask that if you have access to email
or fax, please pursue those options. You can look up more information
about the events in Guadalajara at www.indymedia.org.

Consul: Ing. Carlos Manuel Sada Solana
Dear Ing. Carlos Manuel Solana,
We the undersigned are presenting this letter to the Mexican Consulate of
Chicago to be forwarded to President Vincente Fox as well as the
Governor of Jalisco out of great concern for the persons who were
arrested in connection with the protests that took place in Guadalajara,
Mexico at the EU/Latin American Summit this past week. We are outraged
by reports of sexual and psychological torture inflicted on the
detainees. We know at least 30 persons have disappeared. This is
unacceptable behavior for a civilized democratic country. Thousands of
organizations throughout the world aware of these atrocities, act in
unison to submit this petition. We know that Mexico has a deep concern
for the human rights of all people and expect immediate action to
correct the situation.
WE DEMAND:
FIRST- The immediate release of every prisoner and the halt of any legal
procedure against them.
SECOND- That the authorities present a truthful account with all the
names of the prisoners.
THIRD- The immediate end of all actions of intimidation that have been
carried out against the prisoners, their families, and those who have
already been released.
FOURTH- We demand that the physical integrity of all the prisoners is
guaranteed and the immediate end of any type of torture that has been
carried out against them.
FIFTH-The organizations hereby present, as well as the families of the
prisoners, put direct responsibility on the President of the United
States of Mexico, Vicente Fox Quesada and the Governor of Jalisco,
Francisco Ramírez Acuña, in terms of the physical integrity of the
prisoners and their families as part of a general repressive strategy
used by the government apparatus.
SIXTH- That the participation of the defense lawyers is permitted.
Sincerely,
